Major League Baseball has postponed two of the three scheduled games against the Mariners in Seattle due to a positive COVID-19 test out of the Oakland A's traveling party reported Sunday.
"Out of an abundance of caution and to allow for additional testing and contact tracing to be performed within the Oakland Athletics' organization, the scheduled games between the A's and the host Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park on Tuesday, September 1st and Wednesday, September 2nd have been postponed," an MLB statement read.
Major League Baseball informed the A's of their positive test result at 10 p.m. Saturday night, general manager David Forst told reporters, forcing the postponement of the A's series finale against the Astros in Houston. The positive test came from Friday's round of testing, and the A's will continue to self-isolate in Houston with proper safety measures in place. With another round of testing, the A's conducted contact tracing.
Results from tests done Sunday afternoon yielded no more positive results. All remaining A's players and staff members tested negative for COVID-19.
The team has not identified which member of the traveling party tested positive. It's unclear whether the positive test came from a player, a coach or another staff member.
The A's will need to reschedule three postponed games; one with the Astros and two with the Mariners, at least. After not participating in Thursday's game against the Texas Rangers in Arlington to protest racial injustice, the A's are playing a doubleheader against the Rangers on Sept. 12.
