MLB announces American League batting title to be named for ex-Twin Rod Carew

SAN DIEGO _ MLB shocked the crowd before the All-Star Game.

A sharply-dressed Rod Carew walked to the home plate area before the game with his wife, Rhonda and saluted an applauding crowd as the league announced that the American League batting title will be officially named the Rod Carew Award. Carew, who barely survived a heart attack last November, smiled as he waved to the crowd. The Hall of Famer, former Twin and seven-time batting champion is awaiting a heart transplant.

There was only one thing that could outdo that announcement, and it happened when the league announced that the NL batting title award would be named after San Diego's native son, the late Tony Gywnn. Fans erupted when Mr. Padre _ owner of eight batting titles during his career _ was announced.
