MKM acquires Hull-based Brooke Ceramics in landmark deal for firm

Leading UK builder’s merchant MKM has expanded with the acquisition of a Hull-based tile and bathroom store.

MKM Building Supplies, headquartered in Hull, said the takeover of Brooke Ceramics was “a natural extension for the brand,” and would increase its product range for customers.

Brooke Ceramics is a family-run business which was founded in Hull in 1925. The company has since grown to become the UK’s largest independent tile and bathroom store.

The MKM deal was completed on October 31.

David Kilburn, executive chairman at MKM Building Supplies, said: "We have found a like-minded company in Brooke Ceramics which places the customer at the heart of its business.

“The team at Brooke Ceramics is highly skilled, has superb product knowledge and a great distribution network. We are confident this will be a great asset and look forward to the opportunities ahead."

MKM is the largest independent builders’ merchant in the UK.

Established in 1995 by David Kilburn and Peter Murray, the business has since expanded to run 67 branches across England and Scotland.

Today, MKM employs more than 1,700 people.

Its acquisition of Brooke Ceramics marks a significant milestone for both parties.

Geoff Brooke, of Brooke Ceramics, said: "MKM has an impressive reputation in the industry and is well-known for its commitment to the local building trade.

“Our team is excited at the prospect of becoming part of MKM's dynamic growth, while continuing to maintain the UK's most extensive range of wall and floor tiles for our customers."

Brooke Ceramics is a family-run business which has become renowned for its tile showroom.

Based a stone’s throw away from MKM’s flagship branch in Stoneferry Road in Hull, the showroom features over 100 tiled bathrooms, alongside other products.

The announcement of the MKM acquisition builds on a successful period for the Hull business.

In the year up to September 30, 2018, revenue at MKM rose from £332.4m to £393.8m.

Pre-tax profits soared to £24.5m, as market conditions held strong for the business.

“The group’s unique business model continues to drive high levels of customer service and this, allied with product range extension, has underpinned sales growth which exceeds the market,” directors said in accounts filed to Companies House.

“Sales pricing remains competitive but the MKM Group’s greater buying power, continued excellent support from the supply base and sensible cost control has largely mitigated any margin impact.”
