Mizuho Bank, Ltd. announced on Monday that automated teller machines installed in its branch offices have been restored to normal operation after the previous day's system glitches left customers unable to withdraw cash.
On Sunday, there were cases in which inserted cash cards and bankbooks were taken into ATMs and never returned.
Customers were seen using the ATMs, which were brought back into service on Monday morning. A woman in her 40s who visited the branch in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, seemed relieved, saying, "I was worried the machine might eat my card, but I was able to make a deposit without incident."
Online banking services, which had been halted for some transactions, have also been restored.
Yet the bank was still working to restore service to other ATMs at 42 locations, such as train stations and commercial facilities, as of 9:00 a.m. on Monday.
In an interview with the press on Monday morning, a senior Mizuho official said, "We are truly sorry for the inconvenience. We intend to thoroughly review the situation and investigate the root cause."
The Financial Services Agency will issue a report request order to Mizuho Bank under the Banking Law and ask for a detailed report on the cause of the system failure.
