Mizoram: Zoramthanga tables budget, proposes no new taxes

AIZAWL: Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga, who also holds the finance portfolio, presented the state annual budget for 2022-2023 fiscal with an outlay of Rs 14,008.15 crore in the state assembly on Thursday, with no new proposals to levy taxes for the current fiscal.

He also presented the supplementary demand for the current financial year amounting to Rs 6,025.44 crore.

In his budget speech, Zoramthanga said the state was facing major financial difficulties and he believed that it was important to make people aware of the grim facts that had driven the state to reel under such distress.

"Just when we are cautiously looking forward to an economic revival from the traumatic impact of the two Covid waves, the country has once again been engulfed by a third Covid-19 wave," he said.

Gross state domestic product (GSDP) for 2022-23 was estimated at Rs 39,458.50 crore at current price presenting a growth rate of 16.76% against the current year's figure of Rs 33,793.15 crore, he said. Zoramthanga said he allocated Rs 700 crore in the budget for implementation of the socio-economic development programme.
