Hunter players have experienced mixed results at the Olympic Games in Tokyo over the weekend with both hockey teams off to a winning start while national squads in the men's water polo and women's soccer each suffered losses.

The number-one ranked Kookaburras recorded back-to-back victories in the opening two rounds while the Hockeyroos also triumphed.

Australia's men's hockey side, including Norths defender Matthew Dawson, demolished India 7-1 on Sunday night after rallying to beat hosts Japan 5-3 on Saturday.

A third-quarter double to Blake Govers in game two extended the Kookaburras' 4-0 advantage at half-time while in game one the visitors conceded three goals in six minutes prior to the main break.

They now have a rest day before meeting Argentina on Tuesday (10:30am) and New Zealand on Wednesday (10:15pm).

Australia's women's hockey group, including Souths striker Mariah Williams, accounted for Spain 3-1 on Sunday and have a follow-up encounter with China on Monday (1:15pm).

The country's men's water polo team, also known as the Sharks, went down 15-10 to Montenegro on Sunday despite a first-quarter hat-trick to Merewether's Richie Campbell. Australia, which also includes Hunter Hurricanes junior Nathan Power, next face Croatia on Tuesday (8:50pm).

The women's soccer side, including Emily van Egmond, were beaten 4-2 by Sweden on Saturday. The Matildas now meet the US in the third and final group match on Tuesday (6pm).
