Mitsubishi is recalling over 100,000 SUVs. The vehicle could have corroded liftgate springs that might unexpectedly fail. This is an expansion of an earlier recall. It affects the 2014-2020 Outlander and the 2018-2022 Outlander PHEV.
According to the recall report, salt water can penetrate and accumulate within the dust cap of the liftgate spring, causing corrosion of the cylinder and reducing the wall thickness. This could result in the spring rapidly and unexpectedly losing pressure, increasing the risk of injury.
Mitsubishi first issued a recall for this problem in August 2025 for 91,697 Outlander SUVs. The automaker limited it to vehicles sold or registered in the "salt belt region," which are states known for heavy road-salt use. The new recall includes Outlanders outside those states.
Just days after issuing the first recall, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration informed Mitsubishi of an alleged liftgate spring rupture outside the salt belt region. The automaker investigated and discovered additional affected vehicles in states not covered by the original recall, deciding in mid-April to conduct a safety recall.
The automaker said it is aware of four warranty claims related to gas spring ruptures that occurred between November 2025 and February 2026. Mitsubishi will fix the problem by replacing both liftgate springs with those that have improved corrosion resistance.
Motor1’s Take: A faulty liftgate spring might seem like no big deal, but they are heavy and could cause serious injury if one unexpectedly came crashing down on someone, especially a child. The Outlander is a family vehicle, so it's great to see Mitsubishi fixing this issue.
