Mitch Trubisky feels ‘sense of relief’ as Bears offense starts to jell

Consistency is key for any young quarterback. Whether that’s consistency in an offensive system or consistency as execution.

That’s where Bears third-year quarterback Mitch Trubisky finds himself, coming off an encouraging sophomore season where he showed immense growth.

Now that he’s heading into his second year in Matt Nagy’s offense, there’s an expectation that Trubisky should take that next step and prove he can be more consistent.

Last season, Trubisky got the puzzle pieces and was trying to figure out the easiest way to assemble them.

Now, Trubisky is easily putting the pieces into place, gaining confidence with every rep. He’s developing a mastery of this offense that’s already been evident during offseason workouts.

“When you’re going through that the first time, you kinda tend to go internal,” offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich told the Sun-Times. “You try to survive with what’s your world — not, ‘Hey, dude, I need you right here to do this.’ And that’s much more of what he’s done, what the other receivers have done, what the other running backs have done that have been here. They’ve done a great job with these young guys of coaching them up.”

Trubisky’s had a season and two offseasons to grow in this offense, the dividends which we’ve just started to see play out. For Trubisky, it’s about less thinking and more reacting.

“Everything just kinda slows down,” Trubisky said. “The game slows down, the installation slows down. Your mind’s not going as fast.

“It’s just been almost a sense of relief that we’re getting better and better. We’re coming closer as a team. There’s no substitute for experience, so having that experience in games played and in this offense. It’s hard to describe how exactly it’s different, but it’s better. It’s a lot better.”

Not only has Trubisky benefitted from experience in this offense, but so has the rest of the offense, minus the new additions. There’s no substitute for that comfortability in this offense.

The Bears “want to be the best offense in the NFL,” and that consistency will ultimately prove to be key in achieving that.
