Mitch Trubisky expects to continue using mobility to make plays

One element of Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky’s game that makes him dangerous is his mobility, which has forced teams to have a spy on him during games.

Whether it’s Matt Nagy utilizing his quarterback’s mobility in the offense or Trubisky’s ability to make something out of nothing with his legs, he is one of the better mobile quarterbacks in the NFL.

In 2018, Trubisky had 421 rushing yards on 68 carries and three touchdowns. He also had four runs of 40-plus yards.

But there’s a fine line between using your mobility when the time is right and forcing a run, which was a learning process for Trubisky last season.

“(I have to) just trust myself,” Trubisky said, via the Chicago Tribune. “Continue to play within this offense and play within myself. Don’t try to do too much. Sometimes last year I took off when I didn’t need to. Other times maybe I should have taken off, but I didn’t. It’s just playing within that happy medium, doing what comes natural.”

While Trubisky’s mobility presents more highs than lows, it also cost the young quarterback two games last season. In Week 11 against the Vikings, Trubisky injured his throwing shoulder when Vikings safety Harrison Smith delivered a late hit as Trubisky was attempting to slide.

When Trubisky returned three weeks later, he was smarter about taking off with the football and made it a focus to slide, despite him wanting to fight for every yard.

Don’t expect Trubisky to not use his legs this season, which has proven to be integral in this offense. But you can expect Trubisky to be smarter about taking off with the football.
