Mitch Curry strikes twice as Sunderland U23s make it three wins in a row

Mitch Curry scored twice against Wolves as Sunderland U23s notched their third successive Premier League 2 victory.

The Black Cats won 2-1 at the Academy of Light, with Elliott Dickman's side leapfrogging their opponents to move up to fourth place in the table.

Former Middlesbrough striker Curry put Sunderland ahead in the seventh minute, latching on to a pass from Jake Hackett to get in behind the Wolves defence and firing his finish high into the net.

Wolves put Sunderland under heavy pressure in the first half but could not make it count, with Taylor Perry unable to convert two good chances that came his way.

Wolves keeper Andreas Sondergaard made a smart save to deny Curry a second goal just before the hour.

And at the other end a few minutes later, Anthony Patterson made an excellent stop to prevent Perry equalising from a free-kick.

Curry gave Sunderland some breathing space 20 minutes from time when Stephen Wearne's pass saw him race through one-on-one with the keeper and he made no mistake with his finish.

Wolves pulled a goal back from the spot on 78 minutes after the referee thought he spotted a handball, with Perry converting the penalty.

But Sunderland saw the remainder of the game out to make it three wins in a row, with this victory coming on the back of last weeks' wins at Aston Villa and at home to Fulham.
