Sekiwake Mitakeumi inched closer to a promotion to the ozeki rank by knocking off ozeki Tochinoshin on the fifth day of the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament on Thursday.
The sekiwake, who won the title at the Nagoya basho in July, locked both hands on Tochinoshin's belt as the two met after the start-off at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, and eventually forced out the Georgian wrestler (3-2).
The three yokozuna also kept their records perfect.
Kakuryu showed his dominance in defeating Chiyotairyu, the yokozuna forcing the winless No. 2 maegashira out of the ring without allowing him to secure a hold on his belt.
Yokozuna Kisenosato managed to notch his fifth victory after battling hard against Shodai (2-3). The No. 3 maegashira repelled the initial attack from Kisenosato, but the yokozuna eventually threw him down.
In the day's final bout, Hakuho and komusubi Takakeisho (1-4) slapped fiercely after the jump-off, and the yokozuna came close to hitting the surface. But Hakuho used some quick footwork before slapping the komusubi down to remain among the group of seven tourney leaders.
Ozeki Takayasu also remained undefeated, pushing out winless No. 1 maegashira Ikioi. No. 15 maegashira Yoshikaze and No. 9 maegashira Hokutofuji are also undefeated.
Meanwhile, ozeki Goeido (4-1) won by default as No. 2 maegashira Yutakayama withdrew from the basho.
