In preparation for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Mitaka City Tourism Association in Mitaka, Tokyo, has created a map of the city specifically for foreign tourists. The map, which is entertaining to look at, incorporates many illustrations and photos. JR Mitaka station and its nearby sightseeing hotspots are listed.
Each map is printed on an A2-sized piece of paper and famous places within the city are listed without their specific names written. For example, Zenrinji temple, the burial site of authors such as Dazai Osamu and Mori Ogai is listed in English as "a temple where two of Japan's greatest authors rest." On the back, pictures of places of interest for foreign visitors, like the red chochin lanterns of izakaya pubs and locations of various vending machines are shown.
Also, the map is full of playful activities, such as a step by step tutorial on the correct way to write the kanji character for "taka" in Mitaka, and instructions on how to fold your map into a wearable samurai helmet.
A member of the tourism association, said, "I hope that many people will explore the charms this city has to offer with this map in hand."
