Misuse of govt machinery by BJP akin to SP’s antics: BSP chief Mayawati

LUCKNOW: BSP chief Mayawati has accused BJP of misusing government machinery for the block pramukh elections, which have been marked by violence in several districts. She said such violence and anarchy reminds one of the Samajwadi Party rule, where the then party in power adopted similar antics to stay in power.

With Assembly polls nearing, she said, SP is now speaking out against BJP but doing nothing about it. In any case, she added, SP had also similarly misused its position to win elections.

“The gross misuse of power and money by BJP, and incidents of violence in the UP panchayat elections, first for zila panchayat and now block pramukh, reminds one of the time under the SP government. This is why BSP decided not to contest both these elections,” Mayawati tweeted on Friday.

The former UP chief minister, who recently said that her party should not be taken lightly for the UP polls and that she chose to stay away from the panchayat chairperson elections due to BJP’s use of government machinery for its benefit, added that with UP assembly elections drawing near, SP has started verbally opposing BJP and becoming aggressive.

“However, this is nothing but a ploy to fool people because SP’s own misuse of power and its efforts to stay in power at any cost are very well-known. People don’t forget anything,” she warned.

Mayawati, who has often accused SP of being anti-Dalit and anti-poor, said that SP starts an agitation at every small issue, but has somehow been quiet on matters pertaining to the rights of the poor, farmers, unemployed and the continuous victimisation of Dalits, backwards, Muslims, etc, and violence against them.

“It is worth noting that the party has so far said nothing about the harassment being meted out to them in the state,” she said.
