Missouri AG Investigates School District Over Safety Failures

Missouri AG probes Hazelwood School District for safety lapses.

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey has opened an investigation into the Hazelwood School District following a violent attack on a teenage girl by another student. The investigation focuses on how the school's diversity, equity, and inclusion programs may have contributed to safety failures.

The Hazelwood School District has been accused of refusing to comply with the investigation, with a spokesperson claiming inaccuracies in Bailey's correspondence. The district disputes that the attack occurred during school hours, stating it took place after school hours and off school property.

The spokesperson also questioned Bailey's motives, suggesting that his assumptions about the incident being racially motivated were unfounded. Bailey defended the investigation, citing publicly available information and the district's own policies as sources.

Bailey invoked Chapter 610, which requires the school district to provide requested records or explain why they are not being disclosed. The district acknowledged receipt of the request and committed to providing the records by April 15.

The investigation aims to determine if the Hazelwood School District violated Missouri's Human Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination and ensures the right to full enjoyment of public accommodations for all Missouri residents.
