Mississippi State (3-4) vs. Texas A&M (4-3) Game Preview

Why Mississippi State Will Win

It’s condition critical time for the Bulldogs after losing three straight and four of the last five games. This isn’t the team of last year, and it’s going to struggle a bit to get the offense going, but scoring 23 points in the last two games – losses to Tennessee and Texas A&M – isn’t okay.

There’s a plus side to that, though. Texas A&M likes to grind things down and shorten the game. The Bulldogs can’t handle a team that wants to get up and down the field in a hurry in an offensive shootout – they aren’t equipped to keep up – but the Aggies will be more than happy to keep both sides in the game. Mississippi State loves to control the clock, too.

The pass rush might not be what it was last season with the killer NFL talent up front, but A&M’s pass protection isn’t there and the pass rush isn’t happening on the other side.

The Bulldogs are good on third downs and decent in the turnover margin. This is one of those – do-the-basics-right game – and they should be in it until the end.

Why Texas A&M Will Win

There really isn’t any semblance of a Mississippi State offense to worry about.

Garrett Shrader is giving it a shot, and he threw for 238 yards against LSU, but most of his yards so far have come when the team has been getting whacked. He’s running well, but the Bulldog passing attack is the second-worst in the SEC, partly because the pass protection is having a big struggle.

A&M might not be hitting the quarterback enough, but it’s getting into the backfield enough to be a problem. Offensively, at some point the Aggie passing game is going to be stronger.

Kellen Mond hasn’t been great over the last two games, but the MSU secondary has been ripped apart over the last hire weeks. Having problems against Joe Burrow and LSU is one thing, but Auburn’s Bo Nix and Tennessee’s quarterbacks were able to fire at will, too.

What’s Going To Happen

Be shocked if this is any semblance of a shootout.

Both teams play like they want the game to be over in 65 minutes. They’re going to keep the clock moving, they’re going to want to grind out drives, and for both sides, possessions will be at a premium.

Mond will hit 70% of his passes in one of his sharper performances, Mississippi State’s O will stall too often, and the Aggies will start out what should be a nice three-game run – UTSA and South Carolina are up next – to gear up for the finishing kick of road games at Georgia and LSU.
