Amber Goldman was arrested in Mississippi on drug possession charges. But things got a little dicier when police announced that further investigations were being carried out to see whether Goldman’s drug dependency issues could be tied to her two sons drowning.
On Oct. 21, the official Facebook page of the Gautier Police Department shared what had just transpired. According to them, on Oct. 20 at 5:30 p.m., the fire department and police responded to a distress call at a home on Three Oaks Drive.
There were reportedly two children found unresponsive in a pool. First responders did all they could to revive the children, aged 2 and 5, before transferring them to Ocean Springs Hospital. Upon arrival, doctors announced that the children did not make it.
Chief of Police David Bever was the first to offer consolatory words to the family, stating, “This is an unimaginable tragedy that has deeply affected our community. Our hearts are with the family, friends, and first responders impacted by this heartbreaking loss. We ask everyone to keep them in your thoughts and prayers as investigators continue to seek answers.”
Children drowning is always a devastating situation. Parents can sometimes take years to fully comprehend or even accept what happened — especially if the child had a condition that might make them blame themselves, even when they couldn’t have done anything more. But sometimes the situation is simply a case of neglect. There have been cases of parents so neglectful that they moved houses during school hours and failed to mention it to their child.
Apparently, Goldman falls into the latter category. If what the police are alleging is true, she had controlled substances in the house while officers were there trying to save her children’s lives. She was promptly arrested, and the police are investigating whether the drugs might have had anything to do with the drowning.
It’s still early in the case. Cases where human lives are lost can have twists and turns nobody can predict. And even with that said, sometimes the answers take years, even decades, to be fully unearthed, especially in the case of uncooperative suspects — which some heavy drug users are often known for. For now, the police have announced that investigations are ongoing and that more charges may follow as more information comes to light.
The police department made the bold move of shutting off comments when they posted about the story on their Facebook page. This early into the investigation, the last thing they need is people making wild allegations that only serve as distractions and make uncovering the truth harder than it already is. The police that anyone who has any information regarding the case should reach them first.
The best way to deal with such a tragedy in a close-knit community like this is to give police truthful answers to every question they have. And if they don’t ask you anything, simply follow the developments as they unfold. As tempting as it might be, spreading unverified allegations only muddies the waters.
