Missing person search ends in tragedy as body of man found after rescue operation in Mayo

A body has been pulled from the water off the west coast in a tragic incident.

Officers from both the Coast Guard and Gardai were involved in the operation, which began as a search and rescue job.

However, later in the day it became a recovery operation after a body was reported to have been found in Clare.

A spokesperson from the Achill Coast Guard said: "At 17.04 our Search and Rescue Team was tasked to a report of a missing person who may potentially have been on the Currane Peninsula in Achill.

"While conducting a search with An Garda Síochána and Rescue 118 we were stood down as the missing person had been located in Co Clare, however, sadly it was to be a recovery operation.

"May he Rest in Peace. Whatever you are going through, you can call Samaritans any time, from any phone for FREE on 116 123. If you see someone in difficultly in the water or by the shore dial 112/999 and ask for the Irish Coast Guard."
