Missing person found in Weston-super-Mare after huge search operation

A missing person in Weston-super-Mare was found yesterday afternoon after a huge multi-agency operation.

The man was reported missing in the early hours of yesterday (October 12) and a search was launched in Weston Woods and the shoreline.

Weston-super-Mare Coastguard Rescue Team, Clevedon Coastguard and RNLI Weston spent around five hours looking for the person between 2am - 7am but were unsuccessful.

However the search was relaunched just two hours later after the emergency services received an alert and a number of other agencies were drafted in, including Avon and Somerset Police and Burnham Coastguard.

Weston Woods was the main search area (Weston-super-Mare Coastguard Rescue Team)

A spokesperson for Weston-super-Mare Coastguard Rescue said: "Due to the massive search area, assets were broken down into small teams to cover every square inch of the 320 acre woods.

"The initial search of around four hours came back with ‘nothing found’ from all teams. Everyone regrouped for refreshments while a second plan was discussed.

"It was decided to re-cover some areas from different angles while expanding the outer extremities to cover roadways surrounding the woods."

Just as it was starting to look like the second search might also be unsuccessful, there was a breakthrough.

How does a missing persons investigation work?

"Word came in from one of the coastguard teams that had headed for the area around Marine Lake and Madeira Cove that a person fitting the description had been spotted," added the spokesperson.

"A police unit was quickly despatched to their location and after confirmation, the man was picked up and returned safely to family members to arrange the necessary onward care. We were very relieved.

"We would all like to wish him a speedy recovery. Well done to all involved in a massive multi agent search with a positive outcome."

The person was found at around 2.30pm near Marine Lake.

Weston-Super-Mare Coastguard Rescue Team are a team of 12 volunteers trained in search, mud, water and rope rescue.
