Missing March Madness: Tremont Waters’ Tigers fall to the Spartans

In today’s installment of the Missing March Madness series documenting Boston Celtics players during their days in the NCAA Tournament, we arrive at the anniversary of two way point guard Tremont Waters game against the Michigan State Spartans.

On this date in 2019, Waters’ LSU Tigers took on the Spartans in the Sweet Sixteen, but fell 80-63 despite a strong rally early in the game’s second half.

In the run powering that rally, Waters scored 10 of LSU’s 13 points that would cut the lead to just 4 points. But Michigan State responded with a hail of 3-pointers that would keep the game out of reach for the remainder of the contest.

“That was kind of a shot in the foot because we knew they were capable of hitting those 3s,” offered the Connecticut native at the time (via the Associated Press).

Waters would finish what would end up being his final collegiate game with 23 points on 7-of-16 shooting (including 4-of-9 from beyond the arc); he would of course enter the 2019 NBA Draft that would bring him to become a Celtic.
