South Wales Police have confirmed that officers had been searching the Cynon and Taf regions on Thursday night, especially focusing on the Abercynon area in particular for a man who had made contact with police at approximately 5pm on June 20.
A spokesman for the force said: "Following an extensive search the man, 63, was located safely this morning (June 21)."
Police have also confirmed they were given false information by the missing man, whih led to the scale of the operation to find him.
"The search involved the police helicopter and firearms officers were deployed as a precaution because of information given to police, which we can now confirm was false."
Owner of Ice Motors Wales, Matthew Lock, said officers visited the premises during the search.
Mr Lock said: "The police came to my business, Ice Motors Wales, asking if I knew of any local tunnels because they had a call from a man claiming to be stuck in a tunnel by Ice Motors Wales and T2 Motorsport.
"Later as I left the site an officer implied it was a possible hoax, but there were police searches carried out all evening."
