Brougty Ferry lifeboat crews were scrambled yesterday afternoon after reports of a kitesurfer in difficulty.
The emergency teams raced to St Andrews, in Fife, where they joined a coastguard helicopter in the search.
The operation was suspended after nearly three hours as the light faded.

A RNLI spokesman revealed nothing was found and that they believe at this stage that the emergency call was a ‘false alarm with good intent.’
They confirmed the initial call to St Andrews West Sands was made at 1.30pm yesterday.

The spokesman said: “Both Broughty Ferry Lifeboats were launched for the second time this year at 1330hrs, following a report of a kite surfer in difficulty off West Sands St Andrews.
“Conditions were Force 5 south westerly, moderate seas, however, visibility was good.
“After an extensive search involving the two lifeboats and HM Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 199 from Prestwick, nothing was found and the search was suspended around 1615hrs when light had faded.
“No further reports have been made of anyone missing and it is assumed at this stage that this was a false alarm with good intent.”

And they added: “The first informant gave good positioning and description to Coastguard units on scene.
“Both boats were back at station, washed and refuelled ready for service around 1745hrs.”
