The family of missing Jamie Cannon are receiving ongoing support as efforts to trace him continue, says Ayrshire's top cop.
Divisional commander Faroque Hussain says officers are in touch with the family of the 19-year-old, missing from Saltcoats.
He said a strategic ‘gold command’ had been established to deal with teenager’s disappearance — it comes as officers investigate possible sightings of Jamie after reports that a lorry driver claimed to have spotted him in Cairnryan.
Chief superintendent Hussain told councillors on North Ayrshire’s Police, Fire and Rescue committee this week, that Jamie was amongst more than 100 missing persons reported in the area between April and June this year.
He said: “We’ve had 134 missing persons reported to us over the period notably including Jamie Cannon that you’ve seen, no doubt, quite a lot of social media activity in terms of searches, so we continue to support his family and using both local policing as well as specialist resources, making every effort that we possibly can to trace him.
“His family has been given a point of contact who is regularly updated with the inquiry and we have also put in place a gold command structure to ensure that there remains a high level of co-ordination and ensure that we are being able to utilise our specialist assets and our conventional assets as best as we possibly can.”
The officer added: “It’s been, as you all know, some time that Jamie has been missing.”
Family and friends have mounted a desperate bid to try and trace the man since he vanished on May 20.
He was last seen at around 10am in the town’s Kinnier Road, before being reported missing two days later.
Anyone with information on Jamie’s whereabouts is urged to call Police on 101, citing incident number 1623 of May 22.
