Missing driver found dead in field after body mauled by wildlife

A Lanarkshire driver has been found dead in a field after wandering away from her car when it broke down on a country road.

The 55-year-old's body was mauled by wildlife after she was reported missing just before Christmas.

Police made the grim discovery in a field close to where her car was abandoned near Monkton, Ayrshire, the Daily Record reports.

It is understood she called the AA before leaving the vehicle, which was found on December 18.

A missing persons inquiry was launched and the woman from the Airdrie area was found the following day by officers using sniffer dogs.

The death is not being treated as suspicious.

A source said: "She had phoned the AA to try to get them to come and help.

"But rather than waiting with the vehicle, she got out and walked away, cutting through the fields.

"She's then died while she's been going through the fields."
