Missing autistic girl, 10, found dead in river after week-long police search

A 10-year-old girl from Germany who has been missing for more than a week has been found dead.

Lia was reported missing on February 1 after leaving her parents' apartment, in Menden, dressed only in her pyjamas.

Police had searched for the girl, who suffered with autism, along with hundreds of volunteers and her body was tragically discovered this morning.

Her body was found on a weir in the Ruhr river, Märkischer Kreis Police said.

In a statement the force said: "The 10-year-old missing since February 1 in Menden was found dead in a weir on the Ruhr this morning.

"Our condolences and deep compassion goes to the girl's family."

Police had long fearer that Lia had fell into the river and drowned.

Specialist officers have been searching the area for the past week in the hope the girl would be found alive.

A helicopter, sniffer dogs and a drone were used in the search.

Detectives believe Lia fell into the Hönne river, located near to her home, before her body washed up on the weir in the Ruhr river, which is downstream.
