'Missiles thrown at police' during bonfire removal in West Belfast

Missiles have been thrown at officers as they assisted the removal of bonfire materials in West Belfast according to the PSNI.

Officers attended the Ross Street area of the Divis estate earlier today, as they joined contractors who were removing bonfire materials from a piece of land.

The force has said that during the operation, a small number of missiles were thrown at police and it is understood that one member of the public was hit.

The PSNI have said that they had evidence gathering cameras with them during the incident and will now work to identify those involved in the anti-social behaviour.

Superintendent Melanie Jones said: “During the operation, a small number of missiles were thrown towards police. While no officers were injured, we believe a stone struck a member of the public. Officers at the scene offered medical assistance, which was declined.

“Police had evidence-gathering cameras in the area and will now review all available footage to identify those involved.

“We will continue to work with the local community, representatives and other partners to address this issue, but it is disappointing that some young people and their guardians are not listening to our repeated warnings.

“People who choose to engage in criminal and anti-social behaviour must understand it is unacceptable and must stop. People have a right to live in peace and to feel safe in their communities.

“Parents and guardians have an important obligation to keep young people safe by knowing where they are going and who they are with. Young people must understand the dangers of getting involved in behaviour which could result in injuring themselves, others, or ultimately, a criminal record.”
