Missed Foul Call Costs 76Ers Victory In Playoff Push

Philadelphia 76ers' Kelly Oubre Jr. (9) cannot get a shot past Los Angeles Clippers' Paul George (13) and Kawhi Leonard (2) as time expires in their NBA basketball game, Wednesday, March 27, 2024, in

Officials have acknowledged missing a crucial foul call in the final moments of the Los Angeles Clippers' narrow 108-107 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night. The missed call potentially cost the 76ers a chance at securing a crucial win in their quest for improved playoff seeding.

Referee Kevin Scott revealed in a post-game report that the Clippers' Paul George had indeed made contact with Kelly Oubre Jr. as he was driving with the ball in the closing seconds of the game. Upon reviewing the footage after the game, it was determined that George had drifted slightly to his left, resulting in a missed foul call that should have been made.

Had the foul been correctly called, Oubre would have had the opportunity to shoot free throws with just 0.2 seconds left on the clock, potentially altering the outcome of the game.

Following the final buzzer, Oubre and Sixers coach Nick Nurse contested the non-call, expressing their belief that there was clear contact on the play. Oubre acknowledged the intensity of the moment and apologized for his emotional reaction towards the officials, emphasizing the imperfections in the game.

The 76ers, currently occupying the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference, are striving for better playoff positioning but have faced challenges in the absence of last season's MVP Joel Embiid. Embiid has been sidelined since sustaining a meniscus injury in January, with the team struggling to maintain consistency without his dominant presence on the court.

Despite their struggles, there is optimism within the team regarding Embiid's potential return before the postseason. Coach Nurse expressed confidence in Embiid's recovery progress, hinting at a probable comeback before the playoffs commence.

The missed foul call and the ongoing absence of Embiid have added layers of intrigue to the 76ers' playoff aspirations, as they aim to navigate through a competitive Eastern Conference landscape.
