Helpmann award–winning director Kip Williams stages August Strindberg’s 1888 psychological thriller Miss Julie, in a modern revival starring Mark Leonard Winter (Birdland). The naturalistic play set on the estate of a Swedish count “drips with intoxicating sexual tension and dangerous power play,” says Williams.
For Miss Julie, Midsummer’s Eve is the night when rules are broken, class barriers are set aside and she can dance with whoever she likes. She chooses her father’s valet, Jean, and they play a game of “what if” throughout the night. But it cannot last and soon the dawn will break.
