A photobook that Yukio Mishima (1925-70) worked on shortly before his death will be published in Japan in a large-format limited edition printing for 500,000, yen plus tax, according to the publisher.
Reservations for the photobook started to be accepted Wednesday at the online store for Tsutaya Books Co. and at Ginza Tsutaya Books in Chuo Ward, Tokyo.
This year marks 50 years since the novelist's death. He planned to make the photobook, called "Otoko No Shi" (The death of a man), in 1970 featuring photos of himself by Kishin Shinoyama on the theme of death. The famed photographer, now 79, took photos of Mishima posing as a sailor, a gymnast and in various other guises.
The project was halted after Mishima committed ritual suicide on Nov. 25 of that year.
There will only be 50 copies of the book, each measuring 72.8 centimeters in height and 51.5 centimeters in width. Each will also be signed by Shinoyama and artist Tadanori Yokoo, 84, who was in charge of the book's design and formatting.
The U.S. edition of the photobook was published in the United States in September for 55 dollars. The price of the Japanese edition is so much higher because it is a large book, and only a few will be published, according to CCC Art Lab Co., which is publishing the Japanese edition.
