RAIPUR: Two labourers were killed and six injured late after an iron slab fell on them at an under-construction in Baloda Bazar district on late Monday. The rescue work went on for several hours and the injured were rushed to hospital.
The two deceased were identified as Brajesh Nagwanshi, 28 from Balrampur and Chandu Paswan, 35 from Jharkhand.
According to information, the incident took place around 11.30 at a cement plant where a huge iron structure was being constructed. The iron slab came down crashing upon several labourers. Many got trapped under it as others rushed for their rescue. Police said that six injured workers were rescued and bodies of two were retrieved from the debris. The wounded were rushed to nearest hospital in Suhela region. The condition of four remains critical. A case of negligence was registered against the company and police is probing what caused the accident.
The workers have alleged that neither safety norms were being followed, nor were the labourers alerted about the hazardous work. Workers sat on demonstration at night with the bodies of two labourers, demanding probe and compensation from the company management. The protest went on late till night and it was withdrawn only after police and administration's intervention when the company assured compensation to the kin of deceased. Besides, the nominee or wife of deceased will get pension amount of Rs 11000 and other amount of provident fund and others will be given at the soonest.
The management promised of bearing cost of treatment of labourers at the hospital.
