Mishap as coronavirus self-test kits sent to key workers without return slips

Coronavirus self-test kits sent out to British key workers were found to be missing return slips, it has been reported.

Multiple Randox kits containing test equipment but no return labels were shipped out across the country, with one recipient telling The Sun a Government helpline had blamed Amazon.

The unnamed teacher, from Harrow, North West London, who had begun displaying symptoms, described the mishap as "disgraceful" after discovering there were no return instructions.

The Department for Health and Social Care told The Sun only a "small number" of tests were missing the return information - and replacements kits or new labels could be ordered online and would not go towards the daily tally.

Around 40,000 new kits had been sent out as the UK continues to struggle to keep up with Health Secretary Matt Hancock's promise to carry out 100,000  coronavirus  tests a day.

The figure is widely seen as vital if the nation is to prevent a deadly second wave of infections as it comes out of lockdown.

However, on Sunday the number of daily tests had fallen below Mr Hancock's target for the eighth day in a row.

The Department of Health and Social Care said 92,837 tests were conducted in the 24 hours to 9am on Sunday, down from 96,878 the day before.

It comes as tens of thousands of coronavirus tests were reportedly flown to the US for processing due to problems with British labs.

A Department for Health source told the Telegraph the test results - amounting to around 50,000, according to reports - will still be validated in the UK, and "will be returned to patients as quickly as possible".

Ministers claimed victory on passing the 100,000 a day target on Friday, despite counting tens of thousands of tests which had only sent out by courier, not analysed by labs.

But the government only managed to hit that on two days, Friday and Saturday.

On Sunday ministers insisted testing capacity remains high, but put the lower figures down to fewer people being at work at the weekend.

On Wednesday last week, Boris Johnson shocked PMQs viewers by promising to double the goal to 200,000 by the end of May.

As early as March 16, the World Health Organisation’s advice was: “Test, test, test.”

Yet by the end of that month the UK was testing fewer than 5,000 people a day compared to Germany’s 100,000.

By April 1, the UK had tested just 2,000 of the 500,000 frontline NHS workers.
