Miserable mix of rain and cloud predicted for Bank Holiday weekend

Pack away the barbecues because it could be a woeful Bank Holiday weekend for anyone hoping to catch some sunshine.

A miserable mix of thick cloud and outbreaks of rain is predicted to shroud much of Britain with most places likely to see some showers.

Conditions will become more changeable towards the weekend, with bank Holiday highs of around 20C.

Forecaster Mark Wilson, of the Met Office, said: "Cloud cover could be thick enough to bring showers and some spells of rain and we are likely to see bands of rain spreading their way eastwards across the UK."

He added: "Some areas will see some brightness but all of us will see some cloud and some rain.

"The temperature will be pleasant but not quite as high as we have been seeing."

Brian Gaze, of The Weather Outlook, said Saturday would enjoy the best of the weekend weather.

He said: "Azores high pressure may influence the UK's weather early on. Therefore Saturday could be the pick of the days, at least in the south. On Sunday and Monday all regions could be wet at times."

The gloomy weather will be in stark contrast to the spring bank holiday last year, where most of the country enjoyed warm sunshine.

Sunseekers escaping to Europe for the long weekend will have a better time of it, with Spain and the south of France looking at highs in the low 30s.
