'Miscommunication led to Okuhara's ordeal'

KOLKATA: Former world champion and Olympic medallist shuttler Nozomi Okuhara's recent India visit has been far from rosy. Coming to play at Odisha Masters being held in Cuttack the Japanese star was allegedly first duped by cab drivers at the Delhi airport and then she had to wait for nearly four hours to get an accommodation at a hotel in Cuttack.

Speaking on the issue, Badminton Association of India (BAI) general secretary Sanjay Mishra admitted it was a case of miscommunication. "What happened to her at the Delhi airport is sad but it's something out of our hands. But what happened in Cuttack was something that could have been avoided if there was proper communication from her side," said Mishra.

However, to make sure no other player had to face such circumstances, BAI informed the organising committee to make better arrangements at the Bhubaneswar airport itself. "We asked the organising committee to keep volunteers and car s available at the airport for the entire day from the time the flights begin to arrive so that if any player came unannounced, they could be taken to their accommodation," Mishra added.
