Lockdown 2.0 was 'too slow' and schools should close as Mirror readers give verdict

Mirror readers would back a longer lockdown even though a majority are being financially hurt by coronavirus restrictions.

Over the past week, 13,000 readers of the Mirror filled in a survey giving their thoughts about the lockdown.

Nearly 70% of those who responded said they agreed with the lockdown, which came into force last Thursday, but 72% also said it should have brought been in sooner.

The current plan is for the restrictions to end on December 2.

More than a third of readers (36%) will lose money because of the lockdown.

But Mirror readers once again show their altruistic qualities, with 63% of those readers who expect their incomes to fall still in favour of the lockdown measures.

When it came to the furlough scheme, a quarter of people said it was not generous enough, compared to 13% who said it was too much and 63% who thought it was just right.

The scheme is due to run until the end of March with employees receiving 80% of their current salary for hours not worked.

Most readers - 72% - believed that the Government should have acted quicker when it came to bringing in a second lockdown.

While the Government decided that schools and universities should remain open during the four week lockdown (unlike in March), respondents disagreed.

A significant chunk of Mirror readers, 71%, believe that universities should be shut, while six out of ten backed schools closing.

The lockdown that came into force in England was less severe than the one in March.

Nonetheless, people have been urged not to travel to work if they can avoid it and stay off public transport were necessary.

Shops selling non-essential goods have been made to close.

Those who breach self-isolation rules can face fines of up to £10,000.

People reading the Mirror's sister titles were also asked to fill out surveys.

When the results are compared they show some interesting regional differences.

Readers of the Liverpool Echo were most opposed to the lockdown, with 42% against it.

This compares to Lancashire Live's readers, 78% of whom backed the lockdown.

Those answering the survey through Staffordshire Live were the most likely at 80% to have wanted an earlier lockdown, compared to 39% for Hampshire Live.

Four out of five Staffordshire Live readers thought the lockdown should not go on longer than a month, while 51% of Coventry Live readers wanted it to run on longer.

Mirror Online has launched another survey, asking for reader's views on the potential coronavirus vaccine.
