Mirror, mirror on the walls

The judges of the 2005 Stirling Prize for architecture provocatively awarded the top prize to the Scottish Parliament. Now the controversial building, which went 10 times over budget, has also been voted one of Britain's ugliest buildings, writes Matt Weaver.

A poll of 10,000 people, conducted ahead of Channel 4's new Demolition programme, highlights the continuing gulf in tastes between the public and the architectural establishment.

Top of a list, billed the "dirty dozen" of British buildings, is the shopping centre in Cumbernauld, near Glasgow. Initially considered the showpiece of an award-winning 1960s new town, it is now the building people would most like to bulldoze. Few but the most diehard followers of 1960s architecture would disagree.

But opinion is much more divided on some of the poll's other selections.

Fifth on the public's wrecking-ball wish list is Park Hill estate in Sheffield. Like the Scottish Parliament, there is no chance of Park Hill coming down any time soon. In 1998 it was given grade II* listed status and is now set for a major refurbishment, led by Urban Splash, one of Britain's trendiest developers.

Then there's the Gateshead car park, better known as the Get Carter car park for its role in the 1971 British gangster film starring Michael Caine. Like the film, the car park has a passionate cult following and the Twentieth Century Society, an official conservation body, is trying to get it listed as a culturally significant and top example of brutalist architecture.

So, which buildings would you nominate as Britain's worst?
