Mirror Book Club: Week's new reads including The Colour of Time and The Lido

Take your pick from the best new reads of the week...

The Colour Of Time

Dan Jones and Marina Amaral

This book, a collaboration between historian Dan Jones and Brazilian artist Marina Amaral, takes 200 photographs from the century between 1850 and 1960 and renders them into colour, replacing the sepia-toned dust of history with a livelier image.

Leading politicians, queens and kings alternate with soldiers and peasants, serfs and scientists, labourers and assassins.

Images of Russia before and after the revolution share pages with figures before and after the American Civil War. Jones sketches the historical context with wry economy. Even familiar images take on a new dimension in colour, from Amelia Earhart in the cockpit of her plane to the famous VJ Day photo of a sailor kissing a girl in Manhattan.
