Miriam O'Callaghan opens RTE radio show with her thoughts on gathering scandal

RTE's Miriam O'Callaghan has apologised for her part in the non-socially distanced gathering in Montrose earlier this month.

Photos emerged this week of Miriam, Bryan Dobson and other stars posing for pictures as they said farewell to a colleague.

The pictures have caused uproar and Gardai are now investigating the organisation of the farewell gathering.

Opening her show today, Miriam O'Callaghan said: "I let everyone down and for that I will be forever sorry.

She added that it's "important to lead by example".

Gardai have also confirmed they are carrying out enquiries into the incident.

A spokesperson said: "Gardai are carrying out enquiries focused on the organisers into an alleged event as described and the advices of the Director of Public Prosecutions will be sought in respect of any further actions to be taken.

"Personal responsibility in attendance, social distancing, wearing of masks (other than on public transport and in commercial premises) and other such public health guidelines are not penal regulations."

Taoiseach Micheál Martin described the photographs as "very disappointing".
