Miriam Margolyes sparks hundreds of complaints over Boris Johnson comments on The Last Leg

Miriam Margolyes has sparked hundred of complaints following her appearance on The Last Leg over the weekend.

The former Harry Potter star shocked viewers over her comments about the Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Miriam, 78, was quizzed on the Channel 4 show, which was being presented from Australia to Huddersfield as the hosts filmed from home, about the UK government's handling of the coronavirus outbreak.

She told hosts Adam Hills, Alex Brooker and Josh Widdicombe via webcam: "Appallingly, of course, appallingly.

"It’s a disgrace, it’s a scandal. It’s a public scandal."

But Miriam's comments got even more controversial when she admitted she wanted Mr Johnson "to die" from coronavirus after he spent three nights in intensive care battling the viurs.

"I had difficulty not wanting Boris Johnson to die," she said.

"I wanted him to die. Then I thought that will reflect badly on me and I don’t want to be the sort of person that wants people to die.

"So then I wanted him to get better, which he did do, he did get better."

The comments have since attracted 241 complaints, Ofcom has said.

An Ofcom spokeswoman told the PA news agency: "We are assessing the complaints against our broadcasting rules, but are yet to decide whether or not to investigate."

A Channel 4 spokeswoman said: "The programme is live and unexpected comments can happen.

"In this instance Miriam went on to say that she wanted him to get better."

Miriam was quickly slammed for her remarks, including by Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan.

Piers tweeted over the weekend: "Disgusting. This is where toxic tribalism has got us.. actively wanting people of a different political persuasion to die. Shame on you Ms Margoyles."

However others praised the star for her "honesty".
