Miriam Margolyes sparked more than 240 complaints after saying she wanted Boris Johnson 'to die'

Miriam Margolyes sparked more than 240 complaints after saying she wanted Boris Johnson 'to die' from coronavirus.

Appearing on Channel 4 show The Last Leg on Friday, the Harry Potter actress, 78, sparked outrage by saying she wanted the Prime Minister to lose his battle with the deadly bug when he was fighting for his life in intensive care last month.

Broadcasting watchdog Ofcom has said it received 241 complaints about her comments.

An Ofcom spokeswoman told the PA news agency: "We are assessing the complaints against our broadcasting rules, but are yet to decide whether or not to investigate."

The Last Leg hosts Adam Mills, Alex Brooker and Josh Widdecombe had been discussing Miriam's opinions on how the government had handled the coronavirus crisis.

She said: "Appallingly, of course, appallingly.

"It's a disgrace, it's a scandal. It's a public scandal.

"I had difficulty not wanting Boris Johnson to die.

"I wanted him to die. Then I thought that will reflect badly on me and I don't want to be the sort of person that wants people to die.

"So then I wanted him to get better, which he did do, he did get better.

"But he didn't get better as a human being. And I really would prefer that.

"So we're in the s**t, basically, here."

Her comments shocked viewers, who branded them "disgusting".

But others loved her no-nonsense takedown of the government, with one calling her a "national treasure".
