Miranda Hart denies she's returning for a fourth series after seven-year absence

Miranda has denied reports she's set to return after a seven-year absence from UK screens.

The hit BBC comedy's last episode was on New Year's Day in 2015 and leading star Miranda Hart says that reports she's writing a fourth series are false.

Taking to Twitter, she told fans: "It's so lovely when some people get excited there might be more Miranda. Means a lot.

"But I'm afraid what was in papers today didn't come from me. Nothing planned at this time."

The 49-year-old actress and comedian reportedly told The Sun : "A lot of lovely people have kept on asking for the return of Miranda so here we are and I hope everyone likes it."

Miranda's first series launched in 2009 and starred Lucifer actor Tom Ellis. In November, she revealed on The Gaby Roslin podcast that she was "definitely thinking about" reviving her sitcom, saying: "When you create characters like that, that you’ve lived with for a long time, they do become part of you.

"I do think of them from time to time, a bit like you would a friend that you haven’t seen for a while, 'Oh, what would they be up to'. And so I’ve definitely had some thoughts of where they might be and what would happen with them all.

"The circumstances haven’t quite aligned. But it is something that I would say that I’m now not ruling out.

"Whereas a couple of years after it had finished, I completely ended it and that was that." There is also unconfirmed talk of a live show being in the offing.

Miranda had previously announced in January 2021 that she was taking a career break after the death of her beloved dog Peggy. The shih tzu/bichon frise cross had been Miranda's companion since 2007 and was also the inspiration behind her 2016 memoir Peggy and Me.

The former Call the Midwife star said she would be taking a step back from work and social media to help her come to terms with her grief.

In a statement on Instagram at the time, she said: "Fellow dog owners will know the excruciating sadness of losing your loyal, loving best friend.

"The pain mirrors the unique joy, connection, comfort and love they bring. And Peggy was my absolute rock and source of all those things.

"Their uncompromising, unconditional loving presence is such an incredible gift. Enjoy your dogs as much as you can.

"They are great teachers. I'm using this time to take some time away from work/posting to write and rest and see what the new chapter will be."
