Miranda Lambert says she knew nothing about Joe Exotic animal cruelty amid pic backlash

Miranda Lambert has been met with backlash online after sharing an old photo of herself posing with convicted felon, Joe Exotic.

Joe - real name Joseph Maldonado-Passage - has been thrown into the public eye recently after the release of Netlfix documentary Tiger King, which focuses on him, his rivalries, and his collection of exotic animals.

He is currently doing time behind bars for 17 federal charges of animal abuse, as well as two counts of murder for hire.

Miranda, who's been outspoken about her passion for animals, shared a throwback snap of herself, Joe, his ex-husband John Finlay and two zoo workers.

Posting it on social media, Miranda wrote: "Here's a little Monday memory for y'all. #TigerKing #WayTooPrettyForPrison."

Miranda - who founded the not-for-profit pet adoption MuttNation - received a flood of critical comments, before she explained the photo's history.

"Backstory," she explained, "During Hurricane Harvey, the MuttNation Team went to Houston to help relocate existing shelter dogs to free up shelter space for animals separated by their owners.

"MuttNation asked for volunteers who could transport some dogs from Houston to shelters in Oklahoma, where there was more room and they could be treated and adopted.

"Some guy named Joe volunteered his trailer and staff. Now I know it's 'Joe Exotic'. I've never been to his zoo and I didn't even know he has tigers.

"OBVIOUSLY I'd never condone animals being treated badly."

Mirror Online has reached out to Miranda's representatives for further comment.

She received comments on social media complaining the snap was "embarrassing."

"That's not a pic I would be proud of," one wrote, "Let alone post on social media. Very disappointed."

Another penned: "Yikes. This is embarrassing."

A third scolded: "Surprised that you would post this considering you love animals??? Odd!"
