Miranda Hart has called time on her eponymous hit BBC1 sitcom, although fans will have two Christmas specials to look forward to.

The actor, who also stars in Call The Midwife, said she would miss Miranda but it was “the right time to end it”.

The eponymous programme, which started on BBC2 before moving to a peaktime slot on BBC1 for its third series in early 2013, attracted audiences of more than 7 million for its slapstick humour and plots revolving around her character’s disastrous love life.

Appearing on Steve Wright’s Radio 2 show on Thursday, Hart said she wanted to “end it on a high” and did not want the character to go on forever.

She told Wright there would be “two Christmas specials” of Miranda but they “they are going to be the finale of the show, full stop”.

She said: “As she gets older, I don’t want her to keep falling over and making a fool of herself.”

Hart, who recently set up a production company with David Walliams, was cagey about reports that she has signed up to host a new version of the Generation Game but said she was thinking about “an entertainment format” which might have “elements” of the hit show.
