Miraculous crash escape for driver who nearly plunged off bridge onto the M60 motorway below

A driver had a miraculous escape tonight when they narrowly avoided plunging off a bridge and onto a motorway.

The dramatic crash happened at the roundabout at junction 19 of the M60 near Heaton Park.

A silver Vauxhall Astra smashed into the barrier on the bridge which overlooks the carriageway underneath.

Police posted a picture showing the front end of the car having gone through the barrier and hanging over the motorway.

The barrier was left badly damaged but did its job holding the vehicle from falling.

The airbags deployed but amazingly none of the occupants of the car were injured.

The fire brigade were called.

One lane was closed on the clockwise stretch of the motorway underneath between the entry and exit slip roads whilst officers and firefighters removed the car from the barrier, and then removed debris to make the scene safe.

The North West Motorway Police said: "A vehicle has gone in to the barrier on the roundabout of J19, M60.

"The roundabout is currently closed whilst police and fire extract the vehicle from the barrier. Luckily the barrier did its job and prevented the vehicle and occupants from falling on to the motorway below."

They later added the picture saying: "Reference the vehicle into the barrier at J19 M60, here is a photo to show just how lucky the occupants were. Miraculously the occupants had no injuries."
