'Miracle nobody was killed' as car speeds down suburban Melbourne footpath

CCTV footage shows the car ploughing through a cafe in Clayton.

Witnesses say it is lucky nobody was killed after a car mounted the kerb and sped along the footpath before crashing into a cafe in Melbourne's south-east on Monday afternoon.

Police said it was believed that the driver, a 74-year-old Clayton South man, mistook the accelerator for the brake of his car shortly before 12:30pm.

The mistake caused the car to strike a parked car before mounting the footpath on Clayton Road, in Clayton.

Six people, including the driver of the car, were taken to Monash Medical Centre with injuries following the incident.

Ambulance Victoria said all were in a stable condition.

Mohammed Rizzak was inside the cafe when the car hit.

"Suddenly I heard a big bang and I realised the car had actually hit the cafe, it's thrown me and another person inside the cafe, probably one-and-a-half metres," he said.

"It was really very frightening, you hear these sort of things in the news every now and then, but you don't realise that could actually happen to you."

He said apart from some bruising, he was "all fine".

"I was in shock, I didn't realise what was going on, and suddenly I realised hat the car has hit and the bricks were flying as well."

Another pedestrian said he had just walked past the area when the car mounted the kerb.

He said it was "a miracle nobody was killed" in the incident.

"I turned around and saw a car speeding down the footpath and it crashed into the wall," he said.

"The car mounted the kerb, it was flying, it was going full speed, I was worried, I saw people that I walked past and they just got missed."
