Miracle escape for drivers as horrific M56 crash sparks disruption

Two drivers miraculously escaped unharmed from a severe motorway crash.

One lane is closed and there is queuing traffic already on the M56 after this morning's horrific collision.

Incredible images shared by the North West Motorways Police highlighted the severity of the smash.

Both cars involved were severely damaged - but despite the impact of the crash, no-one was injured.

The collision took place on the M56 between Junction 12, for the Weston Point Expressway, and Junction 14, the Hapsford Interchange, this morning.

The wreckage continues to cause disruption on the eastbound carriageway - towards Runcorn and Merseyside - heading into rush hour.

Traffic monitoring service Inrix reports one lane lane is closed, leading to a travel time of around 25 minutes through the area. Congestion continues back to the M53 junction with the M56.

The North West Motorway Police shared images of the crash on Twitter, adding: "This is what the officers arrived on scene to J14 to J12 Eastbound.

"Thankfully no injuries.

"Highways arranging recovery."

Meanwhile, rail commuters are again advised to check timetables before setting off on journeys to and from Liverpool Lime Street and Crewe as Network Rail engineers continue work following a landslip at Weaver Vale, near Runcorn.

Some services have already been cancelled this morning as disruption entered a second day.
