A driver made a miraculous escape from the wreckage of a car after it flipped during an accident on the M57 motorway today.

Images show the vehicle, which appears to be a red Fiat 500, lying on its side with its windscreen shattered having damaged the crash barriers at the side of the carriageway.

The incident occurred on the northbound carriageway between junctions 1 and 2 near Prescot shortly after midday.
