Miracle escape for crew and patient after ambulance ‘explodes’ in Fife

This is the shocking moment an ambulance exploded on a residential street in Fife.

The incident happened on Monday afternoon in Burntisland, Fife.

Luckily the Scottish Ambulance Service crew and patient were not in the vehicle when it went up.

Emergency crews raced to Rossend Terrace at around 1pm this afternoon.

The patient transport vehicle was ablaze on the road - it is understood the fire started after a fault developed in the vehicle.

Locals described hearing 'explosions' before seeing the ambulance motor engulfed in flames.

A patient had just been safely dropped off seconds before the blaze broke out. No one was injured.

Two fire crews were dispatched to the blaze - one from Burntisland and one from Kirkcaldy.

The vehicle has since been recovered from the scene.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “A fault developed on one of our patient transport vehicles at 13:05 hours today.

"No-one was injured and the vehicle has since been recovered."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 12.56pm on Monday, November 16 to reports of a vehicle on fire at Rossend Terrace, Burntisland, Fife.

“Operations Control mobilised two appliances to the scene."
