Miracle Dublin grandad leaves hospital after spending 26 days in ICU battling coronavirus

An Irish grandad has been released from hospital after 26 days in ICU battling coronavirus - and it isn’t his first spell with a killer flu.

Conor Cleary, 59, spent almost a month in St Vincent’s Hospital on life support with Covid-19 and his delighted family gathered to cheer his victory on Tuesday afternoon.

But the unfortunate Dubliner was also on life support a decade ago with swine flu, where he spent three months fighting for his life.

His relieved daughter, Rachel, praised the frontline staff at the hospital who saved her dad’s life, calling them heroes.

She said: “Our Dad is a true hero and we are so proud of him.

“To all the other families that are experiencing what we have just come through, please take hope and strength from our story

“Not many can say they have survived both pandemics, on life support machines both times and live to tell the tale.

“To our frontline heroes, take a bow.

“You have literally saved our Dad’s life!

“We can’t put into words what you have done for him, my mum & our family.

“Thank you for minding him when we could not be by his side and thank you to every single person that has come together and prayed for dad, we are forever grateful to each and every one of you.”

A touching video posted to Facebook sees the family cheering as Conor takes his first steps out of the hospital after his success story.
