'Miracle' boy, 3, survives after falling five floors from apartment window onto street

A three-year-old boy survived after falling five floors from an apartment window onto the pavement below.

Little Jose was reportedly at home with his mum, sister and aunt when the incident happened on Monday afternoon.

The boy, who has Down syndrome, was seen falling from the apartment in New York City's Bronx neighbourhood.

CCTV footage, which filmed the incident, shows the three-year-old bouncing off an awning of a business below the window before falling onto the pavement.

The boy can be seen trying to get up after falling on the ground.

The clip shows passers-by quickly coming to his aid and a man holding Jose in his arms.

According to NBC New York, Jose's aunt went down to look for him while his mum was terrified to leave the house as she feared her child had died in the fall.

The aunt said in Spanish: "He was just looking at us in surprise. He wasn't crying. Just seemed scared as if wondering what was happening."

The boy reportedly pushed out a piece of cardboard next to the air conditioner and slipped through the remaining space, ABC reports.

According to the American news site, family members only noticed he had fallen from the window when a neighbour came banging on their door.

Hector Nazario, who owns the business whose awning broke the boy's fall, said it was distressing to watch the incident.

He said: "It's kinda hard to look at something like that happening.

"It's a miracle the child is still alive, and it could have been worse."

After the five-floor fall, Jose was taken to a local hospital.

Police said he was lucky to survive with just a broken femur.

The child's family said he will need to remain in hospital while his leg heals.

The New York City Police Department said the fall has been classified as an incident and no charges will be filed.
