'Miracle' baby survives Covid-19 and liver transplant in space of just two months

A baby has miraculously survived Covid-19 and a liver transplant in the space of only two months.

Kasen Donerlson, one, from Syracuse, New York, caught Covid-19 while waiting for an organ to become available.

His mum Mitayah Donerlson said: "It's a complete miracle".

Kasen was born jaundiced last January and was having difficulty gaining weight, the New York Post reports.

In March, he was diagnosed with biliary atresia, a condition which causes the liver's bile ducts to misdevelop.

Surgery to correct the issue didn't work, so in July Ms Donerlson was told her son needed a transplant.

While he was on the waiting list, his condition grew more severe and on November 21, Kasen developed a temperature.

“His whole body felt like it was on fire from head to toe,” Ms Donerlson said.

She rushed him to hospital, where she received the devastating news; her son had tested positive for Covid-19.

“Being completely honest, I immediately thought of death,’’ she said. “He was already fighting for his life, and then he gets Covid. My heart just dropped.”

His infection delayed his eligibility to get a new liver for a month, and Ms Donerlson feared that he would miss any that became available.

Thankfully his fever broke and his symptoms went away.

On January 2, she heard of a donor that would be a good match for her son.

The family drove to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where Kasen underwent a nine hour surgery at UPMC Children’s Hospital.

When he opened his eyes after the surgery, Ms Donerlson noticed that her son's eyes were white, not yellow as they had been before.

“There’s no sign of rejection. Now we just take it one day at a time,” she said.

Kasen is still in hospital for monitoring, but is playful and energetic, and Ms Donerlson has rented a flat nearby to be near him.

The GoFundMe page set up to help the family with medical expenses has raised over £11,000.

Ms Donerlson said the family feel "so blessed.”
