Miracle baby born from womb transplanted to mum from dead donor

A healthy baby has been born from a womb transplanted to the mum from a dead donor, bringing hope to thousands of women.

The mother became pregnant around a year after the transplant and gave birth in June – and one month on, mum and baby are doing well.

Dr Uma Perni of the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, US, where the baby was born, said: “We couldn’t have asked for a better outcome. Everything went wonderfully.

“The field of uterus transplantation is rapidly evolving, and it’s exciting to see what the options may be for women in the future.”

The girl was born via caesarean to the unnamed patient in her mid-30s, who was born without a uterus.

It was only the second birth of its kind worldwide. The mother elected to have the transplanted uterus removed after the birth.

The Cleveland Clinic has transplanted five uteruses so far, three of which have been successful.

The world’s first birth from a deceased donor’s womb was in Brazil, six months before the US birth.

Such womb transplants were pioneered in Sweden, where the first was performed five years ago.
